It's Almost Here...

Here's a couple of links to get ya fired up for tonite's Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals...Enjoy!

Blockbuster Weekend

The Pens' merchandise sales are up 140%, which is good news for Greenfield, aka the Bootleg Capitol of Pittsburgh...

AOL has 5 reasons the Penguins will win the Stanley Cup. Could one of them be the awesome goal calls of Mike Lange?

Penguins will not only have to stick to the game plan in order to defeat Detroit, but they will also have to win some games on the road to start off the series.

At least my hard earned dollars (note from Snack - HAHAHAHA) won't be going towards the Mayor's vacation. He will be paying his own way to Detroit for the Finals.

Oh you're from Detroit are ya? Well in that case…NO OCTOPUS FOR YOU!!!

If you don't like talking trash, well then, you're just a sissy.

ESPN Page 2 gives you 44 reasons the to watch the Stanley Cup Final… as if we really needed it. (or just do yourself a favor and check out our Top 10 Reasons the NHL Playoffs Rock)

GO PENS!!!

Until lata...

Snack Attack -

First and foremost, I'd like to thank my "inside sources" for letting me in on their little secret yesterday, allowing us to break our first story...whoo hoo, watch out, people are going to start mistaking us for real reporters soon...

If you're interested in the story, check out our KDKA sidebar - it's a great widget and how I find out 90% of my Pittsburgh sports news (the other 10% is my old man yelling stuff at me about why we screwed up and who sucks and who doesn't)

Speaking of my old man, he sent me the following video. It's hilarious, and to think FSN, WTAE et al. all used this video on their newscast/shows. Enjoy!

Here's another reader contribution, this one courtesy of the man, the myth, the legend, Bobinkle. Enjoy!

I also found a few links yinz may like (the ones Diego left for me, Jesus he did a big post yesterday...)

Our boys over at Mondesi's House did a nice little number along the same lines as yesterday's post. It's called Get to know Detroit, MI, and is just as long and in depth as Diego's, so check it out if you call your self a hardcore Pens fan.

ESPN also has a story about goons and why we love them, and it's one of the better pieces I've seen out of them (the magazine that is, Sportscenter is still legendary)...You'll also find yourself liking a guy playing for the Syracuse Crunch named John "Nasty" Mirasty, who's as good a goon as there is. Check out these videos below of him in action and tell me you wouldn't like to see him in the Pens' lineup if we lost Big Georges to free agency...

He never really gets a knockout blow, but everyone in the videos (except that first guy) is a legendary tough guy. Dennis "the Menace" Bonvie and Steve "The Boss" Bosse is a hockey player/mixed martial artist. Yea, that jagoff actually goes in a cage and fights...wow.

Anyway, enjoy, and I'll have somethin' nee for ya tomorrow...

***Breaking News***

Big Snack's inside sources at the Mellon Arena have told us that the Pens will open up the Arena to all fans on Saturday and Monday so we can all sit inside and enjoy the games on the huge big screens.

I bet we fill the damn thing up too...

Details are still sketchy but we'll post them as soon as we know more.

Hockey Madness

Let's do this!

I am not gonna lie, I haven’t seen a whole lot of the Detroit Wings all year long. I blame this on three things…

1. I live on the East coast so I don’t really give a crap about the Western conference in hockey until it comes down to Stanley Cup time.

2. I watch Sportscenter every morning, but seeing as how ESPN doesn’t own the rights to the NHL, they only show hockey highlights for about 2 minutes if we’re lucky.

3. Versus is just too hard to watch, I’d rather watch a re-run episode of CSI: Miami on Spike TV.

One thing that I have heard a lot of since the conference finals began, was that Detroit would be the “slight favorites” in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals regardless of who from the east they played. The odds makers have picked Detroit as their favorite in this series.

All the speculation is pointless anyway as it will come down to which team has good enough defense to shut down the opposing team’s powerful offense. So let the madness begin on Saturday and be sure to clear these days off of your schedule.(It's a schedule for you slow ones out there)

So if your like me, and you find yourself not knowing as much as you’d like to about the Detroit Red Wings, don’t worry. Just keep reading and check out some of the links to get familiar with boys from Detroit.

The Wings are one of the original 6 teams in the NHL, and are rich in hockey tradition. Detroit has even been referred to as “hockey town”, and there are plenty of banners hanging from the rafters of Joe Louis Arena, as they have won 10 Stanley Cups. You can read more about the team history right here.

It takes some dedication to go out, buy an octopus (lord only knows where you’d get one), lug it all the way to Joe Louis Arena, and toss it on to the ice. Like me, your probably asking yourself, why do they go through the trouble to do that? Here's why.

It also should be noted that much like other successful franchises in sports (Yankees, Red Sox, Lakers, Patriots, Duke for example) there is widespread hatred for the Red Wings outside of the friendly confines of Detroit, but many also adore them. Much like the other previously mentioned teams in this paragraph, you either love or hate the Red Wings. There is no in between.

Detroit Fans

Even More Hockey Links from Diego

So as we’re here in Pittsburgh trying to find out about the Red Wings, they are there in Detroit trying to figure out more about the Pens. Here is the Detroit Free Press' view of the Pens so far.

Not too sure why anyone asked him, but Coyotes GM Don Maloney compares Penguins-Wings final to the Lakers-Celtics classic championship’s from the 80’s.

Well everyone (including the NHL) got the teams they wanted in the Stanley Cup Finals. Even those crazy Canadians agree that this should be a Stanley Cup to remember.

I was watching Fox Sports yesterday while Mike Prisutta, Rob Cook, and Rob King had a round table discussion about the Pens. The future of the Pens was the topic, more specifically who’d they be able to sign in the offseason. I thought Cook made a good point when he said, even if we lose Hossa, there may be another “Hossa” available at the trade deadline next year. A veteran player who may or may not be in his contract year, who would be willing to come play for the Pens for a playoff run.

I thought this was a pretty valid point especially with the level (and age) of talent we have on the Penguins. It would be smart to trade draft picks and/or prospects in return for making another long playoff run.

And finally… a nice slide show depicting our severe beating of the Philly Flyers, save this one so you can come back to when you’re having a bad day. It should bring a smile to your face.

Snack's Empty Netter

Something has swept over Pittsburgh; that's right, we all have Cup fever. So now the question begs to be asked - what the hell do we do with ourselves until Saturday? I, for one, plan on going to a Bucco game or two (we've largely ignored them but they're almost at .500, which is f-ing amazing for those guys) and watching my ten disc collection of the Pens' greatest games to get me fired up. Feel free to post your off-week plans in the comments section...

And finally, I just wanted to throw a little more praise at your boy, my boy, Marc Andre Fluery. He's playing like he's Superman all playoffs long, and I have no doubt in my mind he'll keep his play up. And apparently he's the nicest guy on the team. Keep up the good work young man - maybe we'll be able to understand that gibberish that comes outta your mouth one day and properly congratulate you.

Until lata...

Detroit Suck City...

We just found out the news - your Pittsburgh Pens will be facing those jagoffs from Motor City (the Red Wings for the slow ones) Saturday at 8PM in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

We will have much more on this tomorrow and in the coming days, but for now, I'll just say Snack likes the way this one is shaping up. And for you NBA fans out there Detroit will lose in 7 in the Eastern Finals to Boston.

So take that Detroit.

Until tomorrow...

Orange Crushed

Time to shave those playoff beards...

Man do I wish I was at the Mellon Arena yesterday for game 5 versus the Philadelphia Flyers. Not only was that place rocking, but I also coulda avoided seeing those damn edge shaving cream and Dockers commercials 50 more freakin times.

Seriously though, it’s easy to nitpick about commercials when your team is completely dominating in a championship clinching game. I’m actually pretty happy the Penguins lost in game 4 because A) it was awesome winning in front of the home crowd and B) it gave all those Philly fans false hope that their team actually stood a chance against us. (Good thing Kimmo Timonen played yesterday) The Penguins did their best job of taking away what little hope Flyers fans did have left by scoring early and often yesterday.

Shave my face with a rusty razor...

So much for the Flyers being too psychical for the Penguins to handle. The Pens showed yesterday when they stick to their game plan the other team can’t match up; no matter what tactic they try. Not only did many players step up during this series with the Flyers, but the Pens also proved that they aren’t afraid to get psychical as well. Give the Flyers credit for making it this far though, I guess, as they were a horrible, horrible team last season. The Penguins just had too much firepower to be stopped.

Bow Down Philly

Everyone in the city of Pittsburgh was happy and celebrating last night as the Penguins return to the cup for the first time since Diego was just a wee lad in 1992; everyone except for the Penguins that is. I know its upsets the hockey gods if you touch the Prince of Wales trophy, but I definitely expected somewhat more of a celebration after the win. (guess these guys celebrate by scoring goals)

No bottle popping for this team though as the Pens were strictly business after the game. Now just like us the team will sit and wait to see who is ends up being best in the west. Note from Snack - my guess is the boys celebrated by hittin' up the local watering holes and shootin' it around with some puck bunnies. I mean really, they're 21 years old; how would you be celebrating?

More Pens Links

Crosby and Geno Malkin have a chance to accomplish something unheard of in the world of hockey, and even the world of sports, if they can manage to manage towin the Stanley Cup.

Hear Mike Lange every time your phone rings! Pens ringtones, what will they think of next?

Ever wonder what the Stanley Cup is made of? Find out the answer to that and anything else you could ever want to know about the Cup right here.

And finally, even more Stanley Cup folklore and myths (apparently there's even some ladies' names on it!)
